Accelerated
Reader (Red Dot) Book
Accelerated Reader Language Arts/Social Studies/Science Interdisciplinary
Plan
Purpose
Each 7th grade student is required to read one Red and Blue Dot Accelerated
Reader book per term (8 total for the school year). This requirement will
enable students to meet language arts, social studies, and science standards
over the course of the year. Specifically the assignment exposes students
to non-fiction reading material.
Red Dot (Social Studies) A.R. Books
The Red Dot A.R. Books for 7th grade World Geography are generally books
about countries around the world (others include biographies and books
on historical topics). As a student reads each book and tests on it they
will meet the following standards.
Social Studies Standards:
2 Culture/Cultural Diversity: Students demonstrate an understanding of
different cultures and how these cultures have contributed and continue
to the world in which they live.
3 Production, Distribution, and Consumption: Students demonstrate an understanding
of economic principles and concepts and describe the influence of economic
factors on societies.
4 Time, Continuity, and Change: Students demonstrate an understanding of
the people, events, problems, ideas, and cultures that were significant
in the history of our community, state, nation, and world.
5 People, Places, and Environments: Students demonstrate an understanding
of interrelationships among people, places, and environments.
Language Art Standards:
1.1 Read a variety of fiction and non-fiction materials including classic
and contemporary works.
Assessment
Students will test on their Red Dot A.R. Book in the library and
must receive a score of 70% or higher or produce a KWL if prior arrangements
are made with the teacher.
Upon completion of the Red Dot book and testing, a student should have
the A.R. Test score written on their reading log, and the reading log should
be initialed by the librarian. Then, a student should show the reading
log to Mr. Hokanson (preferably at the beginning of class) to have it recorded. It
is worth 100 points total (i.e. if a student scores 90% on the A.R. Test
they will receive 90/100 points).
